Closing the distance

Who moves, when, and how: visas, jobs, housing, money and logistics, plus what the first weeks of finally sharing an address actually feel like.

Closing the distance is the goal of most long-distance relationships, and also the point where a lot of them wobble. The move itself is a project with many moving parts, and on top of it you're changing the relationship from visits and video calls to dishes and shared bills. These guides cover both halves.

Start with the closing-the-distance checklist, which lays out the order things need to happen in, from the first serious conversation to the first night in a shared place. If you haven't settled the hardest question yet, read deciding who moves and the pros and cons of closing the distance.

For international couples, the visa usually sets the timeline. Our K-1 fiancé visa guide and spouse visa guide explain the routes, current fees and typical waits, always with links to the official sources so you can confirm. Rules and fees change, so check before you file.

Money and work come next: creating a moving budget and finding a job in a new city are the practical foundations.

And because the relationship needs prep as much as the boxes do, read going from long distance to living together and the guide to your first 30 days under one roof before moving day, not after.

Frequently asked questions

When should you close the distance in a long-distance relationship?

When you've spent real time together in person (ideally including a longer visit), agree on where you'll live and why, and have a practical plan for work, money and any visa. Waiting for a perfect moment rarely works; having an agreed target date usually does. Our guide on timing your move covers the signs.

How do you decide who moves?

Compare the practical factors honestly: visa eligibility, career portability, income, family obligations, cost of living, and each person's support network. Then weigh how each of you would feel about leaving. The person with more flexibility usually moves, but the decision should feel fair to both. See deciding who moves.

How much does it cost to close the distance?

It varies enormously. A domestic move with a rental truck costs far less than an international move with visa fees, flights and shipping. For US fiancé visas, the I-129F filing fee alone is $675 as of 2026, before medical exams, consular fees and adjustment of status. Build a line-by-line budget and add a buffer; our moving budget guide shows how.

Is it normal to struggle after closing the distance?

Yes. Many couples find the first months harder than expected as idealized expectations meet everyday routines, and one partner may be dealing with a new city, job hunt or homesickness at the same time. Research on long-distance couples has linked post-reunion breakups partly to idealization. Talking about it early helps; see when reality doesn't match expectations.
